A comprehensive in-home hearing test typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. This includes a case history conversation, otoscopic ear exam, pure-tone and speech audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflex testing, and a same-day review of your audiogram and treatment options.
Yes. Comet Audiology uses portable, professional-grade audiometric equipment along with insert earphones that meet ambient-noise standards for accurate testing. Most homes are quiet enough for clinical-quality results. In some cases, testing in your familiar environment actually produces better speech-in-noise results because you're more relaxed.
Hearing test pricing varies depending on whether the test is for diagnostic purposes, hearing aid evaluation, or follow-up. Comet Audiology provides transparent pricing during your initial booking call. Some Medicare and insurance plans may cover diagnostic hearing tests when ordered by a physician for medical reasons.
An audiogram is a graph that shows the softest sounds you can hear at different pitches (frequencies) and volumes (decibels). It's the standard way audiologists track hearing ability, identify the type and degree of hearing loss, and recommend treatment. Dr. Patel reviews your audiogram with you on the same day as your test.
Avoid exposure to loud noise (concerts, power tools, loud sporting events) for 12–16 hours before your test, as this can temporarily skew results. Make a list of medications you currently take, since some can affect hearing. Choose a quiet room in your home for the appointment, and consider inviting a family member to attend.
Original Medicare (Part B) may cover diagnostic hearing tests when ordered by a physician for a specific medical reason. Original Medicare does not cover routine hearing screenings or tests for hearing aid fittings. Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans and some private insurance plans include hearing benefits. Adults 18–40 should test every 3–5 years; adults 40–60 every 2–3 years; adults 60 and older annually. Anyone exposed to loud noise at work or in hobbies, anyone with tinnitus, and anyone already wearing hearing aids should test once a year. Teens involved in music, gaming, or noisy sports should also get a baseline hearing test.
